This past week has been an emotional roller-coaster for me. There is so much going on at work, home, extended family, and life in general. It’s so hard to get work done if you don’t have your priorities straight. Honestly, being a working mother, you are constantly battling with your to-do lists, emotions, life, work and other activities. How do one stay effective while thinking of all the hoopla going on around? I have found that I am not alone and I know quite a few women in the same shoes. No wonder more women opt out of the workplace after a while of juggling work and life. The reality is that, it is hard. It is truly hard and I wish that the workplace policies will change and favor women, but we know that is not going to happen anytime soon. So, how do we stay effective at work while juggling life? By being present.

Living in the moment is one of the ways that I have stayed effective. I prioritize, delegate work, ask for help, execute, re-prioritize until my to-do list gets shorter by the end of the day.

And with each single task, I sink myself hopelessly in the moment. I give my undivided attention to every single little detail of my job and that helps me deliver bigger results in a shorter amount of time. I communicate, show empathy, listen actively, and most importantly share my own perspective and story. My life is not separated from my work, my work is not separated from my life. In fact, they are both integrated fully and that is what makes me so effective.

Being present, delivering results, enjoying your work and living your life the best way you can in the midst of all the chaos is what makes life meaningful for working women.

It’s what drives us to be better employees, better mom, and most importantly the best spouse we can be. I encourage to give your work, your life all you can.

Would you like to raise your kids yourself, while still earning money?  At-home jobs are bound to appeal to you  — but while it’s not difficult to understand why so many mothers would love to work from their homes, it is quite tricky for a WAHM to organize her life in such a way that parenting, working, and looking after the home all combine smoothly. How do you make sure you maintain a healthy work/life balance when the boundaries of work and family aren’t as clear?

 Investigate first

Quite a few skills can be used to find or create a good at-home job. Still, at-home jobs that actually bring in a regular, decent income, are not that easy to come by. The internet has opened many exciting opportunities up to parents who would like to run businesses from home. But, that doesn’t mean that all of those article-writing jobs are actually for real, or that you can make a normal monthly income by selling stuff on eBay. Creating a thriving online business takes a lot of time and effort, and finding a genuine online employer is hard too. If you are a writer, translator, accountant, architect, seamstress, daycare worker, or have any other skill that you can use to your advantage, you do have options. So, it is best to start investigating while you are still trying to get pregnant, so that you will be all set by the time your baby gets there.

 Get into a routine

I started working from home when my first child was a newborn, so I slowly grew into it. As a writer and translator, I was not tied to set working hours. My newborn was happy to nap and nurse on my lap in a baby carrier while I was working, and I was convinced that working from home is easy and wonderful. When that child turned into a toddler and we added a new baby, the situation changed — a lot! That is when I knew I had to get into a routine and plan my working hours at the same time each day. I tried working at night when my husband came home from his job, which meant we never got to spend time together, and our marriage suffered. Then, I started working in the mornings while my kids watched TV. After a lot of experimentation, I found that life runs more smoothly if you plan your working hours and stick to them. Make sure to plan to work during a time you have energy, which is most often in the mornings.

 How about the kids?

Some WAHMs say that having childcare while you work is a must, but my children (five and three years old) really enjoy that “unstructured play” that is so important for their development. As long as your children are safe and happy, there is nothing wrong with letting them do their own thing. I like to set some activities up for my kids before I start working. Coloring sheets, playdough, stickers, and puzzles all work well. But, my two kids choose to simply play together most often. Work-at home parents who have full-time jobs will generally need childcare, though. Planning your day in such a way that one partner looks after the children while the other works will create relationship problems in the long run, so having a babysitter may be a better option.

 Don’t forget about me-time

Working from home blurs the boundaries between family time and work time by definition. It’s up to you to guard those boundaries and make decisions that enable you to produce the best work possible, while also being an active participant in your family. Have you got your routine covered, are your kids happy, and do you still have a wonderful relationship with your partner? None of that will last long if you never get any rest. I highly advise anyone who works from home to take at least one day a week off, and to make time to relax, work out, or go for a coffee with a friend, too.

Cooking well-balanced, delicious meals requires thoughtful planning and fresh ideas (not to mention time and money), so it’s no wonder modern women need a little (or a lot) of help to get it done. A huge number of circumstances work against today’s cooks in their efforts to provide good food for their families, such as hectic jobs and activity schedules and/or budget constraints. Here we’ve compiled some tips for ensuring that the modern lady is able to enjoy putting good food on the table.

Plan meals a week ahead and shop for that week’s groceries in one trip

As anyone who has frantically searched his or her cabinets deciding on a meal can attest, planning what you will prepare sometimes takes longer than actually preparing it. When you plan ahead, you can also plan according to what’s in season, what’s on sale at the grocery store, what coupons you have, or what your week’s schedule looks like. This will definitely save the modern lady time, money, and headaches.

Invest in kitchen appliances that will save time and provide a wider range of cooking options

Investing in good quality appliances like crock pots, griddles, roasting pans, and blenders will ensure that you can vary your cooking methods and dishes without sacrificing time. Crock pots in particular can be a busy chef’s best friend, since you can throw ingredients in before work and come home to the delicious aroma of a ready-to-eat meal.

Prepare food in advance and freeze it until you’re ready to cook with it

You might have to spend some time chopping and slicing in advance, but this tip will ultimately save loads of time during a busy working week. Fill a gallon-sized zip lock bag with the ingredients you want in your crock pot dish or stir-fry and stash them in the freezer until you’re ready to pour them out to cook.

Buy a versatile ingredient in bulk and experiment with different preparation methods

Buying meat such as chicken or pork, or a starch such as potatoes, in bulk, can be a great idea for a tight budget thanks to the many different ways each ingredient can be prepared without growing too repetitive. Potatoes in particular can be a great buy because they can be prepared mashed, baked, scalloped, sliced into wedges, or quartered.

Involve the whole family or whole groups of friends in a night of cooking fun

Turn an otherwise typical dinner into a fun culinary adventure with a make-your own pizza, or omelette, or salad night. Have each person choose or contribute a key ingredient to complement the basic elements of the dish. Family and friends will love the quality time together and it certainly takes the pressure off the primary cook. Just make sure the inevitable clean-up job is a group effort as well.

Cooking doesn’t have to be yet another mundane task to fill the modern lady’s schedule. Rather, with some thoughtful planning and shopping, cooking can provide opportunities for creativity, ease of preparation, experimentation with new methods or ingredients, and family bonding time.

Tree

This past weekend have been so much fun with my husband done with finals and spending time with us without thinking of work or school. On Saturday, we woke up and didn’t have a plan. After a sumptuous breakfast, I proclaimed that we were driving to Pittsburgh, a whopping 2.5hours away from home.

Blast My sweet husband who is a road trooper, got behind the wheels and we took off for the weekend. Pittsburgh was so much fun and after dinner, we decided to go to the movies. We haven’t been to the movies in a long time, mainly because my toddler daughter needed a reality check with her theater behaviors. We worked on her theater habit and now she is fine going to the movies without throwing a fit.

As soon as we walked into the movies, she silently whispered that she wanted to see “The Lorax“. Of course, we’ve been reading  The Lorax for about five weeks now, thanks to my trip to Blissdom where we all received a copy of the book. This is me and Calley of The Eco Chic at The Lorax Party at Blissdom.

She absolutely loves it! She is intrigued by the Bar-ba-Loots especially. The Lorax is very dear to my heart, in that it subtly teaches kids to be environmentally conscious and also become an advocate for nature. The concept of the last tree falling, and a whole city made of plastic really got us thinking. Camille asked me after the movie if I have ever met the Lorax and I said, yes. She wanted to know where, and I told her the Lorax is every single one of us. We are here to speak for the trees. She looked up and started smiling. I told her she needed to speak for the trees everyday. And so, the next day she woke me up as early as 8am on Sunday morning and proclaimed that we needed to go to the park because she wanted to go take care of the trees. Her Dad took her. Could it be that our kids are the generation that will bring lasting change to the environmental climate in America? I don’t know. Just a thought. But I sure hope so.

This week started with so much rain but yesterday was definitely hot, we had to open the windows in the evening thinking we could save on electricity. We had to turn the air conditioning on today when we started feeling like dry chickens in a tent. Today, I picked Camille up and off we went to the park. We’ve been to the park about five times this year and three of those have been in the last five days. My daughter enjoys visiting the park and I love to read while I watch her finish dinner or run off with couple of her friends.

One of the most important thing to get this Spring/Summer is a picnic blanket & basket. I got one last year from One Kings Lane and it’s been a life saver. I leave it in my car trunk and only bring it out when it needs to be dry-cleaned. This allows us to wing it anytime. And by that I mean that even if I wasn’t planning to go to the park but one of my family member insists, we would not have to worry about a picnic set-up. I sometimes grab dinner from Ruby Tuesday, Panera Bread or Chinese for such impromptu picnic dinners.

This Spring, we plan on visiting the park often, as well as doing some outdoor exercises such as running, swimming, and hiking.
